The Importance of a Good Nighttime Skin Care Routine

All living organisms, including our body and the cells in our skin, go through cycles known as biological rhythms. These cycles include periods of activity and periods of rest. During periods of activity, our skin cells absorb nutrients, neutralize or fight off toxins and protect the body from environmental factors.

At night while we sleep, our whole body, including the cells in our skin goes through a repair and regeneration phase. In fact, the highest about of blood flow is directed towards our skin cells between the hours of 11 pm and 3 am, when skin cells receive the highest amount of nutrients to repair damaged cells. This is the time when you need to use active skin care products specifically formulated for hight-time use to assist in skin regeneration and rejuvenation.

When you come home at the end of the day, go straight to your bathroom and carry out your night time skin care routine. Do this as soon as you arrive home otherwise you’ll get distracted making dinner, spending time with your family, sitting in front of TV, and by the time you go to bed you’ll be too tired to do it, so do it as soon as you get home. Here is what you need to do:

  1. Cleanse and tone your skin to remove makeup, pollution, and dirt, dust, and grime.
  2. If you haven’t exfoliated in a while, this is a good time to give your skin a good polish.
  3. Apply an active serum that will help support skin rejuvenation and repair. The serum can be selected to target specific problems in your skin. Vitamin C serum helps fade pigmentation and boost collagen production for a younger firmer skin. It also helps skin repair damage so it’s great for scarring. Vitamin A serum is great for people who’ve had too much sun in the past and are prematurely wrinkling. AHA serums are great for refining the skin, refining open pores, smoothing wrinkles, and brightening a dull skin.
  4. Apply a night cream. Night creams usually include some AHAs to refine the skin and stimulate cell turnover and skin rejuvenation. Night creams may also include Botanical Extracts and vitamins that assist the skin to detox and eliminate biological waste products.
  5. Apply an eye cream and neck cream to reduce wrinkles and firm the skin.
