What Causes Puffy Eyes and How to Reduce Bags Under the Eyes

Do you wake up in the morning with puffy eyes? Or perhaps you have noticed you are now getting more puffy or are developing “bags” under the eyes. Puffiness can be caused by a number of factors. Fluid retention, poor circulation, or irritating products. Here is a solution for each problem.

Fluid Retention

If you suffer with fluid retention, it shows not only on the face but you may also feel it in your body. Fluid retention is caused by too much salt and too much sugar in your diet. Small and simple changes can make a difference. Stay away from take away foods as these are usually loaded with salt to make them taste as delicious as they do. Choose salad wraps or vegetable soups for a more nutritious lunch. Sugar is found in processed foods such as breakfast cereals, muffins, sweets, cakes, soft drinks, alcohol and anything labelled “low fat”. Opt for fresh, raw and natural meals and snacks such as nuts, berries, fresh salads, baked vegetables and fresh vegetable juices. Drink lots of water to flush out excess salt and sugar from your body.

Poor Circulation

Poor circulation can be the result of lack of movement, exercise and in some cases vitamin deficiencies. If you have a sedentary lifestyle and don’t exercise regularly, you will have poor lymphatic flow causing toxin build up leading to puffiness, fluid retention, and even poor health. Exercise moves the lymphatics along, so try to get some exercise every day such as walking, swimming, yoga, Pilates or dancing. Massage is also excellent to improve blood circulation and lymphatic flow,so when you are feeling particularly bloated and puffy, book in a body massage.

Vitamin and mineral deficiencies that lead to poor circulation include iron, B-12, niacin and magnesium. Try eat more foods that include these essential nutrients such as liver, oysters, spinach, fish, eggs, dairy, beets, sunflower seeds, tofu, whole grains, nuts, baked potatoes, seaweed and green leafy vegetables.
