Wellness Tips: How To Stay Healthy Over Winter
June 16th, 2019
During winter it’s tempting to fall back into bad eating and wellness habits such as eating junk or comfort foods, staying up late watching TV or coming up with excuses not to go and exercise because it’s too cold or it’s raining. But winter can actually be the perfect time to look after yourself with nutritious comfort foods and giving a body of the rest that it needs.
Improve your wellness by being mindful about your daily routines. Being healthy and well in our fast-paced lifestyle takes organising and planning. Think about how you can adjust your lifestyle to suit winter that will keep you healthy and happy. Here are some tips to keep you well this winter.
Create your own menu of comfort foods that will keep you healthy over winter. Warm vegetable stews and soups are nutritious and comforting. Boost the nutritional value of your meals with herbs and spices loaded with antioxidants such as nutmeg, cinnamon, and turmeric and rosemary, thyme and basil. Instead of bread, enjoy your stews and soups with quinoa or brown rice. Try and add a variety of vegetables to your stews and soups for the right mix of vitamins and minerals.
Although we feel like we just want to curl up and go back to sleep or snuggle up on the lounge and binge watch TV, keeping active over winter is going to keep you healthy and well. Go for a bike ride or walk, winter can be cold but sunny days can be just as beautiful in winter when out in nature. Visit your local botanical gardens, go for a coastal walk, visit your national park or explore your local nature reserves.
Take the time out to relax, unwind and destress. Make yourself a nice cup of herbal tea such as apple and cinnamon, or rosehip and read a gook, play games with your family or listen to mood music. Relaxation is vital to do every day to keep you healthy and well. It helps to destress your mind, balance your hormones, and relax your body from the day’s activities. You can also book a massage to help you unwind and relax. Have you tried our warm Amber and Myrrh body exfoliation and massage spa treatment? It’s terrific to remove dry, scaly skin, moisturise and nourish and help you relax with warm aromatic oils massage. Massage also helps to enhance the quality of sleep and sleep is very important during winter time. Our body responds to the change in season, and our metabolism can slow down, so we tend to need more sleep over winter time than in summer. Don’t try to fight nature, give yourself plenty of time for good quality sleep. Go to bed early and try to get at least 8 hours of sleep every night.
If you don’t look after yourself, you’ll be more susceptible to get sick in winter. Be sure to wash your hands frequently, eat well, take plenty of rest and exercise regularly to stay fit and well over winter. Some people take advantage of the cooler weather to exercise more and get fit in winter in time for the summer season.
