Why You Need to Keep Your Skin Well Hydrated
May 26th, 2019
One of the most often given beauty tips is to keep your skin well hydrated. You’ve probably heard this a thousand times before, “Drink lots of water and keep your skin hydrated”. But why is it so important for our skin?
What Happens If You Neglect the Hydration Levels in Your Skin?
Your skin is a live organ designed to protect us from environmental damage. It is made up of layers of skin cells creating a shield against the environment. The skin cells are alive and your skin is constantly repairing and regenerating itself. Part of this metabolic processes includes good nutrition for the skin cells so they can do the job more effectively. Water is an essential nutrient for healthy skin cells. If they don’t get enough water, the skin cells will not provide an effective barrier and can predispose you to bacterial and fungal infections. A well hydrated skin is a healthy skin.
How can you tell if your skin is dehydrated?
One of the first signs of dehydrated skin is that it feels uncomfortable, tight and dry. Dehydrated skin will also have a dull appearance, a rough texture, and may even be flaking in patches. A dehydrated skin just doesn’t feel right and doesn’t look it’s best. It’s usually the first sign that something is not quite right with your skin.
What is the difference between dry and dehydrated skin?
Dehydration can occur in dry and oily skin types. Dry skin types do not produce enough oil so feel rough and parched all the time. Dry and dehydrated skin feels very uncomfortable and can become sensitised. Oily skin can also become dehydrated even though there is enough oil produced by our oil glands. The skin can be losing too much water and become dehydrated.
How do we treat dehydrated skin?
Rehydrating a dehydrated skin is relatively easy. We must moisturise our skin from inside and out. This is why drinking water is so important because your skin will absorb water from the bloodstream. We can also use topical serums and creams to instantly alleviate dehydration in the skin. The best ingredients to rehydrate a skin is hyaluronic acid and sodium PCA. These ingredients provide instant relief and rehydrate the skin quickly.
How can you quickly hydrate your skin?
An intensive hydrating facial treatment is one of the best ways to quickly and instantly rehydrate the skin. During the facial treatment we will use serums and creams to rehydrate as well as strengthen the barrier of the skin so it can hold onto it’s moisture more effectively. Home care products such as hydrating masks & serums will also help to rehydrate the skin quickly.
Have a look at the video below which takes you through the steps of our intensive hydrating facial treatment.
